John Champlin Gardner (July 21, 1933 – September 14, 1982) is best known as the author of the 1971 novel Grendel. He also wrote literary criticism on topics ranging from Gilgamesh to modern literature and taught courses on Medieval literature, creative writing, and other literature-related topics.   1. Good luck on your website. Love your title: Arch & The Abyss since Gardner’s whole aesthetic is based on the virtual dream and the critical balance between the arch/skylight and the abyss; the arch being the “On Moral Fiction” attitudes that exist in all his writings — his sunlight man comes to mind. I do not know how many times I have read his “Art of Living” and “Freddy’s Book”. There are not enough efforts to reopen Gardner’s world.
